چکیده

It is shown that genetic inversions can be used to recover lognormal aerosol size distributions from multiangle optical scattering cross-section data measured by a polar nephelometer at a wavelength of 0.532 mm. The inversions can also be used to recover the absolute calibration factor of the polar nephelometer. The method is demonstrated by applying it to polar nephelometer data measured during the Shoreline Environment Aerosol Study (SEAS) at Bellows Beach on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Also, the inverted size distributions are compared with those inferred from direct measurements by particle sizers during SEAS. At 0.532 mm, the polar nephelometer data are dominated by the effect of coarse-mode hydrated sea salt. Although the inversion was unable to place constraints on the accumulation-mode size distribution, the modeled size distribution provides a good description of optical scattering at wavelengths of 0.532 mm and above.

Obtaining Calibrated Marine Aerosol Extinction Measurements Using Horizontal Lidar Measurements, Differential Lidar-Target Measurements and A Polar Nephelometer

Lidars are ideal for mapping the spatial distribution of aerosol concentrations, however efforts to convert the lidar measurements into estimates of the aerosol extinction or scattering coefficient are usually complicated. The difficulties arise from the uncertainty in the aerosol backscatter-to-extinction ratio and the lidar calibration. In marine conditions with little absorption, the aerosol...

Evaporation of Ammonium Nitrate Aerosol in a Heated Nephelometer: Implications for Field Measurements

Ammonium nitrate is a semivolatile aerosol component under typical ambient conditions and thus difficult to measure. In the field, the aersosol scattering coefficient is usually measured with a nephelometer by heating the ambient aerosol to a low reference relative humidity (∼40%) in order to measure a light scattering coefficient that is intrinsic to an aerosol rather than dependent on atmosph...

Influence of relative humidity upon pollution and dust during ACE-Asia: Size distributions and implications for optical properties

[1] An extensive set of aerosol physical and optical measurements was taken over the waters east of Asia during the Aerosol Characterization Experiment-Asia (ACE-Asia) project in the spring of 2001. Dust storms upwind of the study area combined with intense pollution plumes from coastal cities yielded an opportunity to examine both types of aerosol, in isolation and as they interacted. Scatteri...

A double inversion: Size and time resolved growth rates for aerosol particles in the CERN CLOUD experiment

An integrated analysis of multiple instruments measuring concentrations of aerosol particles in the CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets) chamber at CERN obtains size and time dependent growth rates. A matrix inversion is performed twice: first to get size distributions from measured concentrations using instrument transfer functions; secondly to get growth rates from size distributions usin...

Real refractive indices and volatility of secondary organic aerosol generated from photooxidation and ozonolysis of limonene, α-pinene and toluene

Thermodenuding particles can provide insights into aerosol composition and may be a way to create particles in laboratory chambers that better mimic the atmosphere. The relative volatility of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) was investigated by evaporating organics from the particles using a thermodenuder (TD) at temperatures between ∼ 60 and 100 C. Volatility was influenced by the parent hydroc...
